تَرىyou see البَرِيَّةَhumankind فيin حالَيْthe two states of نَدىbounty ورَدىand death
يَريشُهاhe enriches them وبِحَدِّand with the edge of السَّيْفِthe sword يَبْريهاhe cuts them down
You see humankind in two states: bounty and death;
The wilderness sees both dew and flowers
He enriches them, and with the sword's edge he cuts them down.
Its feathers ruffled, it's edge made sharp by the sword
فَفِرقَةٌso one group بِمَناياهاby its fated deaths مصبّحةvisited at dawn
وفرقةand another group صَدَقَتْcame true فيهاfor it أَمانِيهاits wishes
So one group is visited at dawn by its doom,
One group's daybreak is lit by their deaths
And for another, its wishes have come true.
While another's hopes have proven true
كَأَنَّهُas though he were الدَّهْرُTime فيin الآَمالِhopes يَنْشُرُهاhe unfurls them
بَيْنَamong العِبادِhumankind وفيand in الأَعْمارِlifespans يَطْويهاhe folds them away
As though he were Time, unfurling hopes
As if time in our hopes arrays them
Among humankind, and folding lifespans away.
Among the people, and in their lifespans folds them
إِذاwhen الصَّوارمthe keen swords عَرَّتْهنَّbared them غَضْبَتُهُhis wrath
فإِنَّهُthen indeed he بِنُفوسِin the souls of الأُسْدِlions كاسيهاclothing them
When his wrath lays the keen swords bare,
When the swords bare themselves, wrath takes him
Then he clothes them in the souls of lions.
For he clothes them in the spirits of lions
يَظَلُّhe continues بِالهَزِّby brandishing يَوْمَon the day of الرَّوْعِterror يُضْحِكُهاhe makes them laugh
وبِالدِّماءِand with blood مِنَfrom الهاماتِheads يُبْكيهاhe makes them weep
He keeps them laughing as he brandishes them on the day of terror,
Laughter takes him amidst the trembling on the feared day
And with blood from heads he makes them weep,
And with blood from the blow, weeping takes him
حتَّىuntil كَأَنَّas though جُفونَthe eyelids of المُشْرِكينَthe polytheists حَلَّتْloosened
طَيّاتُهاtheir folds وأَعارَتْهاand lent them مآَقيهاtheir inner eye-corners
Until it seems the polytheists' eyelids have loosened
Until the eyelids of the pagan hosts
Their folds and lent the swords their inner eye-corners.
Have shed their covers and lent them their pains
