خَليلَيَّmy two friends إِنّيindeed I am لِلثُّريّاof the Pleiades لَحاسِدُindeed envious
خَليلَيَّ إِنّي لِلثُّريّا لَحاسِدُ
وإِنّيand indeed I am عَلىat رَيْبِvicissitudes الزَّمانِtime لَواجِدُindeed resentful
وإِنّي عَلى رَيْبِ الزَّمانِ لَواجِدُ
My two friends, I am indeed envious of the Pleiades,
My friend, I envy the Pleiades
and I am indeed resentful of the vicissitudes of time.
And I find the course of time unkind
أَيَبْقىdoes it remain? جَميعاًtogether شَمْلُهاtheir cluster وَهْيَthough they are سَبْعَةٌseven
أَيَبْقى جَميعاً شَمْلُها وَهْيَ سَبْعَةٌ
وأَفْقِدُwhile I lose مَنْthe one whom أَحْبَبْتُهُI loved him وَهْوَthough he is واحِدُone
وأَفْقِدُ مَنْ أَحْبَبْتُهُ وَهْوَ واحِدُ
Does their cluster remain united, though they are seven,
Will all seven stars remain intact
while I lose the one I loved, though he is only one?
While I lose the one I hold most dear?
