بين الموالي وبين العبيد
I looked closely, testing the pretenders,
I observed and tested the pretenders
Among masters and among slaves.
Among the loyalists and slaves

And swore there was nothing beyond it.
Swearing there was more than that

And no worshipper of desire is rightly guided.
And he who worships whims is not wise

And a striver whose time is spent drinking his fill—
A scholar busies his time with greed
If it passes, he spends an unyielding night.
If he misses out, he stays up grieved

Moaning if a melody quavers
And because of it casts scorn on a new garment [uncertain reading].

Tearing his garments intentionally
To replace them with a new garment.
To gain from it a new robe

At the devil, this extra brother of ours?

Why do they ask me for affection
One who knows not what estrangement holds?
When they know not what lies in hearts?

I share my love and they doubt it
And I once gave it freely to the loving one.
Though I shared it readily with loved ones

So my misfortunes vanished, and good fortune returned.

Why, my people, in their ignorance
Of the solitary one's dignity and the lone one's solace?
Scorn the unique, the intimate friend?
