قُلsay لِلطّويلَةِto the long-necked woman مَوضعplace of العِقدthe necklace
وَلَطيفةand delicate الأَحشاءِthe innards والكَبدِand the liver
Say to her whose long neck bears the necklace,
and who is delicate of innards and liver:
أَلاwhy did you not وَقَفتِyou paused عَلىover مَدامِعِهِhis tears
فَنَظَرتِand then you looked ماwhat يَعملنَthey do فيin الخدِthe cheek
Why did you not pause over his tears,
then see what they do to the cheek?
لَولاwere it not for التَمَنطُقwearing a girdle والسوارand the bracelet مَعاًtogether
والحِجلُand the anklet والدُملوجand the armlet فيon العَضدِthe upper arm
But for the girdle and bracelet together,
and the anklet and armlet on the upper arm,
لَتَزايَلَتshe would have come apart مِنfrom كُلِّevery ناحيةside
لَكنbut جُعِلنthey were made لَهاfor her عَلىon عَمدِpurpose
she would have come apart on every side;
but they were made for her deliberately.
جاءَتcame إِلىto عينَيكِyour two eyes وجنتُهاher cheek
فيin خَلعةa robe الخَيريَّthe wallflower والوَردِand the rose
Her cheek came before your eyes,
in a robe of wallflower and rose.
