هَذاthis كِتابٌa letter فَتىًa young man لَهُhe has هِمَمٌaspirations
هَذا كِتابٌ فَتىً لَهُ هِمَمٌ
عَطَفتُturned (vowelled 'I turned') عَليكtoward you رَجاءَهhis hope رَحمُهhis kinship
عَطَفتُ عَليك رَجاءَه رَحمُه
This is the letter of a youth with lofty aims;
This is the letter of a young man with lofty aspirations.

غَلَّshackled الزَمانtime يَديthe two hands of عَزيمتهhis resolve
غَلَّ الزَمان يَدي عَزيمته
وَهَوَتand plunged بِهِwith him مِنfrom حالقٍa lofty height قَدَمُهhis foot
وَهَوَت بِهِ مِن حالقٍ قَدَمُه
Time has fettered the two hands of his resolve,
Time shackled the two hands of his resolve.
and his foot sent him plummeting from a towering height.
And his foot sent him plunging from a lofty height.
وَتواكَلَتهُand left him to one another ذووthose having قَرابتِهِhis kinship
وَتواكَلَتهُ ذوو قَرابتِهِ
وَطواهُand concealed him عَنfrom أكفائهِhis peers عدَمُهhis poverty
وَطواهُ عَن أكفائهِ عدَمُه
His own kinsmen passed him off from one to another,
And his kinsmen each left him to the others.
and poverty has hidden him from his peers.
And his poverty hid him from his peers.
أَفضىconfided إِليكto you بِسرّهwith his secret قَلمٌa pen
أَفضى إِليك بِسرّه قَلمٌ
لَوif كانَwas يَعرِفُهُknew him بَكىwept قَلَمُهhis pen
لَو كانَ يَعرِفُهُ بَكى قَلَمُه
A pen confides his secret to you—
A pen confided his secret to you.
had it understood that secret, his pen would have wept.
Had it known him, his pen would have wept.
