عَن أَذانِ المؤذّن
Hand me a cup of solace
Pass me a cup of solace
A cup of solace give me

From the muezzin’s call to prayer.

ماnot تَرىyou see الصُبحthe dawn قَدalready بَداhas appeared
ما تَرى الصُبح قَد بَدا
فيin إِزارٍa waist-wrap مُتَبّنِstraw-colored
في إِزارٍ مُتَبّنِ
Do you not see? Dawn has appeared,
Do you not see that dawn has already appeared
You see the dawn revealed
wrapped in a waistcloth, wearing a loincloth beneath.
In a straw-colored wrap?
In a tattered gown
فآسقنيهاso give it to me to drink سُلافَةًpure, choice wine
فآسقنيها سُلافَةً
والطَمنّيand slap me وأَرمِنيand pelt me
والطَمنّي وأَرمِني
So give it to me to drink—the choicest pure wine—
So give me that pure wine to drink,
Serve it smoothly then
and slap me, and fling me down.
And slap me and pelt me.
Comfort and lull me
