وَكَمand how many مِنof ميتَةٍa death قَدindeed مِتُّI died فيهاin it
وَلَكِنand yet كانَwas ذاكَthat وَماand not شَعَرتُI felt
And how many a death I have died,
Yet that happened, and I did not feel it.
وَكُنتُand I was إِذاwhenever رأَيتُI saw فَتىًa young man يَبكيhe weeps
عَلىover شَجَنsorrow هَزأَتI mocked إِذاwhen خَلوتُI was alone
And whenever I saw a young man weeping
Over sorrow, I would mock him when I was alone.
وأَحسَبنيand I reckon myself أَدالturned the tables اللَهَGod مِنّيagainst me
فَصِرتُso I became إِذاwhenever بَصِرتُI caught sight بِهِof him بكيتُI wept
And I think God has turned the tables on me:
So now, whenever I see him, I weep.
