ياO نَفسsoul بَكّيweep بأَدمُعwith tears هُتُنِstreaming
وَواكِفٍand falling drops كالجمانِlike pearls فيin سَنَنِa steady course
O soul, weep with tears that pour in torrents,
O soul, weep with streaming tears,
streaming like pearls strung in a row,
And falling drops like pearls in a steady stream,
عَلىfor دَليليmy guide وَقائِديand my leader وَيَديand my hand
ونُورُand the light وَجهيmy face وَسائِسَand the governor البَدَنِthe body
for my guide, my leader, and my hand,
For my guide, my leader, and my hand,
the light of my face and governor of my body.
And the light of my face and the governor of the body.
أَبكيI weep عَليهاover it بِهاwith it مَخافَةَfor fear أَنthat
يَقرُنَنيmay bind me والظَلامُand darkness فيin قَرَنِa shared tether
I weep for it with its own tears, fearing that
I weep over it with it, for fear that
it will yoke me together with darkness.
I may be bound together with darkness by a single tether.
