A woman, when she caught sight of tears
And a woman said, having seen tears
A woman's words as she gazed with tear-filled eyes,
streaming profusely down both cheeks, said:
Streaming, pouring down both cheeks:
Streams descending upon her cheeks.
أَتَكذِبُdo you lie? فيin البُكاءweeping وأَنتwhile you خِلوٌfree of love
قَديماًlong ago ماindeed (emphatic) جَسَرتَyou dared عَلىto الذُنوبِsins
“Do you feign your weeping, though you are free of love?
"Do you feign weeping, though free of love?
Do you lie in weeping while you are free
How long you have dared to sin!
Long have you dared to sin.
Of sins long past you never dared.
قَميصكyour shirt والدُموعand the tears تَجولcourse فيهِthrough it
وَقلبكَand your heart لَيسَis not بِالقَلبِthe heart الكَئيبsorrowful
Your shirt, with tears coursing over it,
Your shirt, with tears coursing through it,
Your shirt and tears wander about in it
while your heart is no sorrowing heart,
While your heart is no sorrowful heart,
While your heart feels no grief.
نَظيرlike قَميصthe shirt of يوسُفَJoseph حينَwhen جاؤواthey came
عَلىupon أَلبابهِits collars بِدمٍwith blood كَذوبlying
is like Joseph’s shirt when they brought it
Is like Joseph's shirt when they came
Like Joseph's shirt when they came
with false blood upon its breast.”
With lying blood upon its collar."
With false blood upon its hems.
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her فِداكِa ransom for you أَبيmy father وأُميand my mother
رَجمتِyou guessed blindly بِسوءwith the evil of ظَنّكِyour suspicion فيabout الغُيوبِhidden things
I said to her, “May my father and mother be your ransom—
So I said to her, "May my father and mother be your ransom!
So I said, may my father and mother be your ransom,
through your ill suspicion, you have guessed at things unseen.
You have guessed at the unseen with your ill suspicion.
You have stoned with your ill assumption of the hidden.
أَماindeed واللَهِand by God لَوif فتَّشتِyou searched قَلبيmy heart
بِسرّكِwith your secret بالعويلwith wailing وَبالنَحيبand with sobbing
Nay, by God, if you searched my heart,
Indeed, by God, if only you searched my heart,
By God, if you probed my heart
you would find it wailing and lamenting over your secret.
With your secret, with wailing and sobbing!
With your secret in wailing and lament.
دُموعُthe tears of العاشِقينَlovers إِذاwhen تلاقواthey meet
بِظَهرat the back of الغَيبthe unseen أَلسِنةُthe tongues of القُلوبhearts
The tears of lovers, when they meet
The tears of lovers, when they meet
The tears of lovers when they come together
in absence, are the tongues of their hearts.”
In the unseen, are the tongues of hearts."
Are the tongues of hearts in privacy.
