غَلَبوا الناسَ بِالنَدى وَالعَطِيَّة

People of generosity, bounty, and gifts;

People of generosity and attainment

A people of generosity, favors, and attainment,

They surpassed all others in generosity and giving.

They have surpassed people through friendliness and generosity

Surpassing all mankind in dew-like bounty and giving.

جِئتُهُ زائِراً فَأَدنى مَكاني

جِئتُهُ زائِراً فَأَدنى مَكاني

وَتَلَقّى بِمَرحَب وَتَحِيَّةِ

وَتَلَقّى بِمَرحَب وَتَحِيَّةِ

I came to him as a visitor, and he seated me close by,

I came to him as a visitor and he brought me near

I came to him a visitor, and he drew me near,

And received me with a welcome and a greeting.

And welcomed me with greetings and courtesy

Receiving me with welcome and warm greeting.

لا كَمِثلِ الأَصَمِّ حارِثَةَ اللُؤ

لا كَمِثلِ الأَصَمِّ حارِثَةَ اللُؤ

م شَبيهُ الكَلبَةِ القَلطِيَّةِ

م شَبيهُ الكَلبَةِ القَلطِيَّةِ

Not like Haritha the Deaf, the base one,

None compares to the deaf Hārithah al-Lu'lu'

Not like the deaf one, Haritha of baseness,

Who resembles a small, short-legged bitch.

Nor the resemblance of the spotted female dog

Who resembles a bitch of the Qaltiyyah breed.

جِئتُهُ زائِراً فَأَعرضَ عني

I came to him as a visitor, and he turned away from me.
