لَوif رَكبتُI sailed البِحارَthe seas صارَتthey would become فِجاجاmountain passes
لاnot تَرىyou would see فيupon مُتونِهاtheir backs أَمواجاwaves
If I sailed the seas, they would turn into mountain passes;
If I sailed the seas, they would become still pools,
Were I to ride the seas, they would turn to dry ravines,
you would see no waves upon their backs.
You would not see any waves in their depths,
And on their barren surface, you would see no waves.
فَلَوand if أَنّيthat I وَضَعتُI placed ياruby (first fragment) قوتَةًruby (remaining fragment) حَمراred (first fragment)
ءَred (final fragment) فيin راحَتيmy palm لَصارَتit would surely become زُجاجاglass
And if I placed a red ruby
If I placed a piece of amber in the palm of my hand,
And were I to place a ruby of the deepest red
in my palm, it would turn to glass.
It would surely turn into glass,
Within my palm, it would turn to common glass.
وَلوand if أَنّيthat I وَرَدتُI reached عَذباًsweet water فُراتاًfresh and palatable
عادَit would become لاno شَكَّdoubt فيهِabout it مِلحاًsalty أَجاجاbitterly briny
And if I reached sweet, fresh water,
And if I passed by the sweet Euphrates,
And were I to approach a spring of sweet, fresh water,
it would, without doubt, turn salty and bitter.
Without doubt, its water would turn salty and bitter,
It would turn, without a doubt, to bitter, salty brine.
فَإِلىso to اللَهِGod أَشتَكيI complain وَإِلىand to الفَضal-Fadl (first fragment)
لِal-Fadl (final fragment) فَقَدfor indeed أَصبَحتُI have become (contextually: they have become) بِزاتيmy falcons دَجاجاchickens
So to God I complain, and to al-Fadl,
So to God I complain and to the virtuous I turn,
So to God I raise my complaint, and to Al-Fadl,
for my falcons have indeed become chickens.
For I have become with my misery - a chicken.
For I have found my noble falcons turned to hens.
