وَهَذا جَميلُ عَلى بَغلَةٍ

وَقَد كانَ يَعدو عَلى رِجلِهِ

And here is Jamil, astride a mule,

Who used to scramble on his own two feet;

يروح ويغدو كأير الحمار

ويرجع صفرا إلى أهله

He comes and goes like a donkey's swinging tool,

And returns to his kin with empty hands.

وَقَد زَعَموا أَنهُ كافِرٌ

وَأَنَّ التَزَندُقَ مِن شَكلِهِ

They have alleged that he is a disbeliever,

And that heresy is stamped upon his looks;

كَأَنّي بِهِ قَد دَعاهُ الإِمامُ

وَآذَنَ رَبَّكَ في قَتلِهِ

I see him as the Imam calls him forth,

And announces to your Lord his execution.
