رِفقَةًa band مِنfrom among رِفقِهits bands
The mice settled in my house,
The mouse descended, settling in my house,
a band from among their bands.
Accompanied by a cohort of his kin,
حَلقاًin rings بَعدَafter قِطارٍa file
نَزَلواthey settled بِالبَيتِin the house صَفقَهall at once
In rings, following a file,
In circling swarms and columns, line by line,
they settled in the house all at once.
They occupied the home in one fell swoop.

A weasel was atop my house,
The weasel stands as master of my roof,
climbing to the top of a lote tree.
Ascending high atop the Lotus tree.

شَقَّةٌa sliver مِنfrom ضِلعِthe rib of سَلقَهa chard leaf
His sword was a sharp sword,
He wields a sword, a blade of iron steel,
a sliver from a chard leaf's rib.
A splinter taken from a wolf-bitch rib.

ل—ght (completing 'night') فَدَقَّthen he knocked البابَthe door دَقَّهa knock
He came to us, knocking at ni—
He came to visit us amidst the night,
—ght, then gave the door a knock.
And rapped upon the door a heavy knock.
دَخَلَhe entered البَيتَthe house جَهاراًopenly
لَمnot (past negation) يَدَعhe left فيin البَيتِthe house فَلقَهa scrap
He entered the house openly,
He breached the home in openness and glare,
leaving not a scrap in the house.
And left no single morsel standing there.

And he shielded himself with a loaf,
He took a loaf of bread to be his shield,
and gave Nazawayh a slap.
And struck his leaping rival with a blow.

And from that slap I saw
A strike from which I witnessed, purely dazed,
a blue tinge in the black of the eye:
Within the eye’s deep black, a flash of blue,
زُرقَةًa blueness مِثلَlike اِبنِson of (in 'weasel') عِرسٍa spouse (in 'weasel')
أَغبَشَdusky تَعلوهُcovers it بَلقَهa white patch
a blueness like a weasel—
A blueness likened to the weasel’s coat,
dusky, with a white patch over it.
A dusky grey marked by a piebald spot.
