الحَمدُpraise لِلَّهِto God شُكراًwith thanks
أَمشيI walk وَيَركَبُwhile he rides غَيريsomeone other than me
Praise be to God, with thanks.
Praise be to Allah, thanks
Praise be to God, with thanks most true,
I walk while others ride.
I walk while others ride
I walk on foot while others ride past view.
قَدindeed كُنتُI was آمُلُhoping for طرفاًa noble steed
فَصِرتُso I became أَرضىcontent to accept بَعيرِwith a donkey
I had hoped for a noble steed;
I once hoped for more
I used to hope a noble steed to lead,
so now I would settle for a donkey.
Yet now content with less
Now I'd be pleased with just a camel's speed.
لَمdid not تَرضَbe content نَفسيmy soul بِهَذاwith this
ياO رَبِّmy Lord مِنكَfrom You لِخَيرِfor better
My soul was not content with this—
My soul was not satisfied
My soul refused to settle for this state,
O my Lord, for better from You!
O Lord, from you comes good
O Lord, from You I seek a better fate.
