دَفتَرٌ فيهِ أَسامي
كُلِّevery قَرمٍnoble chief وَهُمامِand a valiant man
كُلِّ قَرمٍ وَهُمامِ
A register containing the names
A book wherein lie listed
Of every noble chief and valiant man,
Names of the generous and brave
وَكَريمٍand a generous man يُظهِرُshows البِشthe cheer- (word fragment)
وَكَريمٍ يُظهِرُ البِش
رَ-fulness (word completion) لَناto us عِندَupon السَلامِthe greeting
رَ لَنا عِندَ السَلامِ
And every generous man who shows cheer-
And of every noble soul
fulness to us upon greeting.
Who greets us with a smile so wide
يوجبُit makes obligatory النَصفَthe half-payment عَلَيهِupon him
يوجبُ النَصفَ عَلَيهِ
حاتِماًmaking it binding فيin كُلِّevery عامِyear
حاتِماً في كُلِّ عامِ
It imposes a half-payment upon him,
Binding himself to pay each year
Making it binding every year,
Half his wealth, like Hatem Tai
أَوor فُلوساًcopper coins كُلَّevery شَهرٍmonth
أَو فُلوساً كُلَّ شَهرٍ
لِثَلاثينَamounting to thirty تَمامِin full
لِثَلاثينَ تَمامِ
Or copper coins each month,
Or each month a sum in full
Amounting to thirty in full.
Equal to thirty pieces bright
