I shunned intimacy with beautiful women,

and sobered from intimacy with those

who delighted the eyes of anyone

    they stayed with until death.

So leave the ruins to an ignorant man

    who weeps over deserted dwellings.

And give up praise of a beardless youth,

and of a servant, and of beautiful women.

    And praise a loaf adorned

    by a crust beyond description.

It leaves the levelheaded man besotted,

    bewildered, making mistakes in prayer.

And it is as though the loaf's markings

were stars rising in the night.

    تَركُ الرَغيفِ مِنَ الهِباتِ

    Withholding the loaf is folly;

parting with the loaf counts as a gift.
