To Al-Aqsa Mosque from the holy sanctuary,

We journeyed by night, and illumination came from the Presence of Holiness.

And we reached the sanctuary of sanctification while the night lay asleep,

And it had gone so mad that it could not recover from possession.

An advance guard of weary riders on mounts as weary, yet theirs,

Despite fatigue, was the swift stride of a male ostrich on watch.

At times they raced the ostriches of the sky, and at others

Kept pace with the desert's ostriches in the soft-sanded waste,

Until the landmarks of Dhu Tuwa appeared to the eye,

And the sanctuary of the Holy House appeared, free of defilement.

We alighted on a bank of the sacred valley,

Upon a spot within it, whose burial soil was blessed.

Then from the side of the Mount there shone before us, gleaming,

The radiance of a fire's light that had dispelled the darkness of confusion.

And that was no fire, but the radiance of the Lady of Splendor,

Revealed to a heart that had relinquished conjecture.

Her radiance once illumined Mount Sinai,

And Moses had perceived her before, without the senses.

Upon the heart's Mount we heard from her the call of One

Who transcends any defining difference or genus that might approach Him.

And the herald of nearness called from the Presence of Contentment:

Lo, rejoice, for illumination surpasses the fruit of planting!

So blessed are we, among those at the sanctuary's right-hand side,

And blessed are we, among those in the Presence of Holiness.
