O lord, turn your gaze toward al-Sham!

My father be the ransom for the Garden and the Sacred House!

And direct a glance toward her sanctuary,

To heal her of the sickness that has beset her.

Unsheathe for her a keen blade of resolve, which long

Served as her defender before, by God.

It fed al-Qabiji to dreadful Death,

And made his water-bearer drink the cup of doom.

Then Ibn Ulwan rose high in her land,

And Ibn Bustan grazed as cattle graze.

Her deficient one has deepened her decline,

The rabble's exemplar—nay, the commoners' shaykh.

And the stunted one, among his followers, became

A follower of no imam, but himself an imam.

So to you and to God she has come,

Lamenting her plight with streaming tears.

She asks the lord for safety from those two,

And from the Lord comes fulfillment of her desire.

Enough indeed is the calamity that has befallen her,

That shattered, by God, a pillar of Shamam:

The loss of Ismail, the mufti of her land,

The imam, the learned scholar, the righteous and noble man,

Shaykh of Damascus's shaykhs—may he be drenched

By the rain-stars' downpour, its gentle showers unbroken.

And may God preserve our lord for us,

As a pillar of lasting glory until the Resurrection.
