My lord, O sea of generosity,

O you whose favors are ample,

    O finest of learned scholars,

    Whose counsels suffice me,

    And piercing meteor of excellence,

Lodged in the lofty Milky Way,

And you whose lights have become

    Guides for those astray:

A little poem has reached you from me,

Like a garden watered anew by a night raincloud,

    And so its blossoms opened,

    Like your own pure virtues.

It came from your servant, heading

    Toward your door—a handmaid,

Seeking your approval; enough for it

Are approval and well-being from you.

It seeks success in its purpose, in

A matter it has approached hopefully,

And considers it an easy thing,

O you whose gifts are widespread.

It is that our master, who

    Has attained the lofty sciences,

The scion of a branch of glory,

    From pure roots,

    From an Arab tree,

    Soaring in its loftiness,

    Came to the book market

    After the second prayer,

    And bought from Lutf, on

The Commentary on al-Mawaqif, a gloss.

It has been your servant's desire since

The days of youth, and my wish.

So may my dealings with my lord

Meet with his gentleness of manner.

Accept it; its verse was composed

    In an hour or two.

May you both ever remain in blessing

    And enduring happiness,

As long as a turtledove laments upon

A bough of the radiant gardens,

And the stranger yearns for the homeland,

    After sojourning in faraway lands.
