وَبَحرَand sea عِلمٍof knowledge رَماناshowered us مِنهُfrom it بِالدُرَرِwith pearls
My lord, O garden of bounty ringed with blossoms,
and sea of knowledge that showered us with its pearls,
بَعَثتَyou sent نَحويtoward me عُقوراًbiting verses (reading uncertain) حَيّرتbewildered فِكريmy mind
أَبهىmore splendid مِنَthan الزَهرِblossoms بَلindeed أَزهىmore radiant مِنَthan الزُهرِthe bright stars
you sent me biting verses that bewildered my mind,
more splendid than blossoms—indeed, more radiant than stars.
دُرّاًpearls لَوَif اَنَّthat القَوافيthe rhymes قَلَّدَتهwore it as a necklace زَهَتthey would shine
بِحُسنِهِwith its beauty لاnot بِحُسنِwith the beauty of الدّلcoquetry وَالحَوَرِand dark-eyed charm
Pearls—if rhymes wore them as a necklace, they would shine
with their beauty, not with coquetry or dark-eyed charm.

Within its lines is a reproach that surpasses
the description of dwellings with a fair-eyed beauty in them.
كَيفَhow السلوُّforgetting وَليwhen I have فيin كُلِّevery جارِحَةٍlimb
إِلَيكَfor you شَوقٌlonging مُحِبٌّa lover عاقِرُbarren of الوَطَرِfulfillment
How could I forget, when in every limb I feel
a lover’s longing for you, barren of fulfillment?
وَفيand for جَنابِكَyour person وُدٌّaffection لاnot يُغَيِّرُهُalters it
عَلىthrough مُرورthe passing of اللَياليthe nights حادِثُthe onset of الغِيَرِfortune’s reversals
And for you there is affection that is not altered
through the passing nights by any turn of fortune.
ماnot كانَwas هَجرُforsaking سَماءٍa heaven أَنتَyou نَيِّرُهاits shining light
عَلىout of ملالٍweariness وَلاnor السُلوانُforgetting مِنpart of وَطريmy desire
I did not forsake a heaven whose light you are
out of weariness; nor is forgetting you my desire.
لَكِنbut تَحَمَّلتُI have borne مِنof نُعماكَyour bounty ماwhat عَجَزَتproved unable
عَنto حَملِbear أَدناهthe least of it مِنّيin me طاقَةُthe strength of البَشَرِhumankind
But I have borne such bounty from you that I cannot
bear even the least of it with my human strength.
فَكُنتُso I was فيهِin this كَماjust as قَدindeed قالَsaid شاعِرُناour poet
أَبوAbu (father of) العَلاءِal-ʿAlaʾ (loftiness) سَقاهُmay it water him غَيثُrain مُنهَمِرِpouring down
So in this I was as our poet said,
Abu al-ʿAlaʾ (may pouring rain water him):
لَوِif اِختَصَرتُمyou had reduced مِنَsome of الإِحسانِthe kindness زُرتُكُمI would have visited you
وَالعَذبُand sweet water يُهجَرُis shunned لِلإِفراطbecause of excess فيin الحَصَرِconstriction (perhaps intended: coldness)
“Had you shown less kindness, I would have visited you;
and sweet water is shunned for excessive constriction [perhaps: coldness].”
