I witnessed—having beheld the abode of his beauty—

a face that rivals the moon at its fullest,

and knowledge, firm as a mountain, linked to speech

    whose sweet, clear flow surpasses sweet, limpid water;

and generosity: his bounty embraced the lords of Rum,

and my proof is their acknowledgment of his bounty.

He rose among them like the moon on its night of fullness,

in beauty; the light of his majesty turns the gaze back.

And he surpassed them in knowledge, forbearance, and eminence,

and in sound judgment in all his deeds.

So, O master, whose hand's generosity

surpasses the bountiful cloud as it pours down:

at your door the eye's tears now flow, imploring

your bounty; do not rebuff them by rejecting their plea.

And grant me the commentary of the imam who ascended

the pulpit of rigorous inquiry when he spoke.

And I mean by him the master of fatwas, Abu al-

Su'ud, his family's benefactor; may God give him drink

and lodge him in Paradise, to be served its pure wine,

in closing, by the Seal of the Prophets and his family.
