I swear by the dawn of a dazzling full moon's brow,

And by the face of the luminous, radiant moon,

And by the eyelids' languor, shooting into the heart

Death's arrow from the glances of young oryx,

And by every slender-waisted beauty who, when she sways,

Puts to shame the fresh bough on the gardens' sandy rise,

Each a tender maiden matching the forenoon sun,

A graceful beauty who mocks the skittish gazelle,

Full where her anklets lie, with a supple figure,

Slender beneath her sash, with a languid gaze,

A soft, full-figured beauty, strutting in youthful glee,

Like a thicket in the garden, laden with blossoms.

No, rather by resolve like a keen, cleaving sword,

And by steadfast resolve that conquers enemies,

And by ambition that has surpassed the Milky Way's crown,

And soared above the sky's Flying Eagle,

And by newly won honor, lofty in station,

And by ancestral nobility, unassailable and pure:

Indeed, I am the armored warrior in battle's thick, when

The envious launch an avenger's raid against me,

From every man I never accepted as a friend, nor

Ever counted among the chiefs of my clans.

A lion against me, yet in wars an ostrich,

    Drooping-winged, shying at a whistler's whistle.

He claimed this morning that I had plagiarized

What I composed—alas for him, how unjust!

If he wishes, I will embroider verse in his praise,

And portray him, describing him through glorious deeds,

With every rhyme that, whenever recited,

Leaves Jarir among the last in rank,

Until he sees that I am a man of a house

That raised lofty glories in ages past.

Yet mine is a lineage that has let fall

The train of fidelity over treacherous time.

O excellent man, whose thoughts have brought us

Radiant meanings in dazzling love poetry,

I adorned Time's neck with a necklace of peerless gems,

And clothed it in the splendid brocade of praise,

    With resounding odes that left

No swirling dust for the sons of estrangement.

Take it, more delicate than the east wind's breath,

In its enchantment, and subtler than a visiting phantom.

It strides over Sahban, dragging its train,

And drags pride's mantle over the restrainer.

And guard it jealously, for its place

Is that of my dark pupil within my eye.

May I ever remain a meadow lush with virtues,

While you compose poetic verse among companions,

As long as a turtledove laments in a flowering garden,

And Hajir's dove goes forth to trade songs with it.
