My lord, you have honored these abodes, and long

Have the dwellings flourished through you, hills and landmarks alike.

And from the first fruits of your thought you sent a graceful maiden

Toward me, so I became lovesick and enraptured by her.

A virgin with a tranquil gaze; whenever she looked,

She drew keen swords against you from her glances.

And when she swayed, strutting in youth's exuberance,

She put the supple shoot of the arak tree to shame.

Like a garden at the onset of late afternoon, where sang upon

Its branches gray doves, tenderly brooding.

The south wind's hand had embroidered it with a raincloud,

Dark-hued, while the fragrance of its perfume grew all-pervading.

She brought the greeting of one whose rank rose high,

And so he rose above the star of the Milky Way.

A lord who gathered every kind of virtue,

And became an arbiter among their sons, with decisive judgment.

She bore within her folds, from his fragrance,

A scent surpassing caravans of blended perfume.

So she struck the flints of longing between my ribs,

For I had not known the time of the visit.

But when I broke her seal,

And kissed her smiling mouth, its teeth cool and sweet,

I hastened to pursue the purpose for which she came,

And I regard pursuing it as a binding obligation.

And when a friend one day appeals to his friend

In words, with me that becomes decisive action.

Could loyalty's creed permit that there be seen

Anyone but me undertaking this task one day?

No indeed! Then may it never travel, nor ever strive—

    My foot—to accomplish mighty undertakings.

My lord, companion of sincerity, you whose

Character has become like gardens wafting fragrance,

Speak no more of the man you wasted your life flattering,

Ever praising him among the armies,

    أَلفَيتُهُ فيها مُريباً خائِما

    Until one day a need called you to him;

I found him in that matter untrustworthy and fainthearted.

I have indeed tested the sons of this age, and found none

Among them but a weakling called resolute.

So abandon them as ostrich chicks leave a forsaken egg

In a dark wilderness whose paths are effaced.

And shun all but loyalty's companion; do not be seen

Ever making peace with the sons of this age.

May you remain a garden, flourishing with virtues,

Smiling as you give us the blossoms of meaning,

As long as a turtledove sings in a thicket,

And the reed pen writes upon the cheek of a page.
