She arrived, perfuming the quarters and the horizon—

a cherished wish whose scent made our land fragrant.

She came as though the east wind had spent the night soothing her

with trees amid gardens whose palm blossoms rose high.

Or a fragrant breath from the hills of Darin

had gifted her fragrance in the deepening dark of nightfall.

Slender-waisted, she glories in a figure graced with slenderness,

like a tender bough of ban, bearing its fruit.

She gazes at me with eyes of striking black-and-white beauty,

whenever she appears before a heart enraptured or in love.

Had Ibn Unayn seen the beauty of her face,

I would have reminded him of a time that rekindles burning grief.

How lovely she was when she visited us, richly adorned,

with pearls already strung in order at her throat.

Or if she appeared before a beloved endowed with eloquence,

she would outshine him, and Sahban too, were he to speak.

She brought an affectionate greeting from a trusted brother,

whose fragrance shames the scent of musk when opened.

No wonder that, among mankind, I long for him:

for a noble man naturally yearns for the companions of his youth.

I yearn for his radiant face whenever there rises

    the sun of day, and its morning reveals a rosy glow;

and whenever, before dawn, a Syrian breeze blows

at Jilliq's foot, or lightning flashes over the protected pastures.

Our beloved friends, by Him whom I beseech in prayer

to favor your love-worn one with reunion:

never have I recalled a dwelling made lovely to me by you

without becoming distraught and choking on my tears.

Nor, at midmorning, has there sung in the two Ghoutas' gardens

a gray dove anxiously lamenting a far-off mate,

without my patience ebbing or my fortitude failing,

and tears overflowing from my eyes and streaming free.

May rain bless our days, when our company was united,

    and the foe was broken, with no fear to trouble us;

when life's face was bright, serene, and joyful,

and Time had lowered its eyelid, closing its eye to us.

We reveled with each beauty whose kohl-dark gaze bewitched,

who shamed Usfan's gazelles whenever he was gentle,

especially if he came at dawn, drinking from the cup,

or came coyly at evening, drinking from the cup.

Would that Time, which in its morning decreed for us

the scattering of our gathered band, had never in all time been created!

Oh, will our brief moments, those that passed with you,

return one day, that I may reap reunion with you?

I truly hope the All-Merciful will grant your return

one day, so we may knit my company together after its dispersal.

May He water al-Awasim in torrents that do no harm,

and lavish abundant water from the rainclouds' waterskins upon them.

God's peace be upon you from me, as long as there remains

a longing that awakens sorrows and burning pangs.

The Nuama wind carries it toward your land,

like Darin's musk, growing sweeter whenever inhaled.
