You leveled tawny spears in defense of the Law,

and guarded its meaning with gleaming sword-blades.

And you brought glory piety as a bridal gift,

and won her, a virgin slender at the girdle.

And how often you tamed her steeds,

though they are unruly toward whoever mounts them.

    O master, whose judgment

is the judgment of Solomon, prophet of the winds.

You led the judges of the age—nay, surpassed them

in learning, forbearance, bounty, and seeking gifts.

For Iyas is not clever when

your judgments are recounted—by the Lord of success!

Nor is Shurayh versed in judging

beside you, O son of the noblest, radiant men.

The office you attained won glory

through dignity of soul, eminence, and gladness.

The sultan appointed you to it—by him I mean

Murad, God's shadow, lord of largesse—

    after it had been sought

by fifty, each having signaled his desire for it.

He deemed you, among them, fit

for it, so appointed you by an explicit decree.

So you went forth envied, with the honor of a man

free of disgrace and any faultfinder's rebuke.

You trail in Rum the skirts of joy,

and scorn your peers, fully armed.

O lofty Safed, glad tidings to you! There has

settled in your broad, spacious dwellings,

after Salah al-Din, the shaykh of mankind,

Salih, a master, lord of bounty open to all.

And since he chose you as his dwelling,

and through him prosperity shone in your abode,

I said to whoever asks its date:

“You were appointed—live long, Salih!—to the abode of righteousness.”
