A greeting like a garden's fragrance after it smiles,

Upon your dwelling, the abode of love of old,

Upon a haunt where separation's hand has left

Only an unscarred vestige of your stay.

May it be drenched, where the dwellings spread wide,

By a cloud of old acquaintance whose faithfulness was never faulted.

May it favor the haunts of pleasure there, and may

Its landmarks be clothed in the twin robes of youth and song.

May the Lord of the Throne greet the dweller in its quarter,

Even though he does not cherish a devoted lover's affection.

With a lovesick man's greeting: whenever al-Ghada is recalled,

It casts fiercely burning embers between his ribs.

He yearns for those dwellings and their people,

With the yearning of one longing, far from home and love-stricken.

He goes at evening amid the anguish of cares, and goes at dawn

With a burning liver and a heart torn apart.

The turtledove in the grove reminds him, from afar,

Of youthful days, of his earliest prime,

And the shimmer of a life that charmed with beauty and freshness,

In the shade of a prime overflowing with ease,

And the shade of youth that glistened with luxuriance,

And a robe's rich pattern, its first bloom never embroidered.

The cycling of night and day folded up its cloak, just as

My reproachers folded my beloved's affection away from me.

Many a friend whose nearness I enjoyed

For a time, while Time's eyelid was blind to our affection.

The suns of wine revolved between me and him,

In a gathering of companionship, amid drinking companions like stars,

Until misfortunes shot their arrows at us,

And my dwelling and familiar haunt lay empty of his love.

The nights swept his presence from me and left

In my heart the lingering effects of deep-rooted sickness.

What am I but the possessor of a soul on loan,

And a heart lent to burning grief and pain?

Among my griefs—and misfortunes are many—

Was the change of a Time given dominion over the noble,

And a brother's injustice: he makes false accusations and turns

Upon me with blame, while correspondence is forbidden.

O wrongdoer, whose goodwill we nevertheless seek,

Be gentle with a lover stricken by your parting.

Listen to a friend's reproach, for perhaps

A rebuke may restore the friendship of one who breaks away.

Here I have unfolded my reproach; hear it as a gift,

And threaded it upon a string of ordered pearls.

Before now I was steadfast against separation,

Unbending, never stopping at a marked-out ruin.

Yet I am not one to subdue judgment with passion,

Nor call longing wise when it goes astray.

I go at evening clothed in garments of chastity,

And at dawn bear forbearance like Mount Yalamlam.

If a friendship disowned me, or I disowned it,

I moved on to another without regret.

But love for you exchanged my honor for abasement,

And burning longing displaced abiding bliss.

I say, when the carefree one sleeps and I do not,

Upon the heat of a blaze raised against my ribs:

My two friends, what ails my friend, that his affection has changed,

While mine, through all this time, has never been severed?

Has Time's vicissitude changed him, or has he turned

To a slanderer's whispers, or an artfully embroidered tale?

O utmost reach of hopes, O goal of every wish,

Delight of the lovesick soul, O generous one!

God be with you concerning a lover whose plight is harmed

By separation, which works in his heart like a keen spearhead.

Steadfast in keeping the bond, he has long

Nourished you with love's milk, free from blame.

His virtues have proved pure before you, deserving

Of fine praise from eloquent and inarticulate alike.

Like hillside flowers opened by the east wind's hand,

As it trailed its hem across them in a smile.

Honor for him the beauty of affection, even if

Time grows harsh; do not heed a wrongdoer's words.

I seek protection for you from one whose ways were described

By a man of letters preeminent in poetry:

When a man's deeds are evil, his suspicions turn evil,

    And he believes the delusions that habitually beset him;

He makes enemies of those who love him at his enemies' word,

And finds himself in doubt as dark as night.

Remember—may God preserve you—our former friendship,

And the later covenant, not demolished by aversion.

You denied the loyalty of a friend who has gained

Precedence over every other ally in devotion to you.

And I denied his affection, radiant in its freshness,

And you faced him with the point of a sword that cuts clean through.

Gently, O exalted in rank, O you through whose love

We shall win tomorrow a prize from the Lord of Majesty.

Do you disown one who kept faith with you, though your dwellings lie far apart?

May you rise again! Is this the conduct of an honored man?

Restore to him one day what has passed, that perhaps it

May feather the bare shafts among my arrows and darts.

If no hope remains in the depths of your affection,

And a crosswind lashes it with separation,

I shall spur my pale camels, departing your land,

In keeping with the saying of a noble man foremost in greatness:

The lands most worthy of residence, among all others,

Are those where a free man gains whenever he settles.

A soul has offered you sincere counsel for a friendship

Whose preservation is a duty upon every Muslim.

When you keep company with a man, choose one refined,

Noble in character, devoted to virtues.

And deal with others in a winning spirit, as far as I can,

And shun—may my soul ransom you—all that is blameworthy.

    وَإِن أَنتَ ضَيّعتَ الوَفا خِلِّ تَندَمِ

    Honor the rights of brothers in pure affection;

If you neglect fidelity, my friend, you will regret it.

May the Merciful never protect one who fails to honor

The rights of brotherhood with a cherished friend.

Treat the days well, and know that they

Are mounts toward a dark grave in dusty earth.

For Time is nothing but a sleeper's dreams,

And a young man's glory in it is like a phantom offering greeting.

Do not be deceived by glory you attain

Through it; fear a day when it tramples you with a camel's hoof.

Be mindful of the Lord of the Throne, and know that He

Sees what is hidden in every closely guarded matter.

Take this poem, born of deliberation,

Containing reproach like a well-strung necklace.

Amid lines of longing it appears as though it were

The dusky tint of a young gazelle's lips showing through a smile.

More delicate than tawny wine mixed one evening

With rain from clouds whose udders Mirzam's hand had milked.

Remain in lasting bliss and happiness,

In a pleasant life upon glory's heights, and fare well.

Your station is praised, your door a refuge,

And your shade stretches far; good fortune claims kinship with it.

For all time, while poetry is made to weep by the cadence

Of a cooing that sings of faithfulness now gone.
