    وَمِن عَهدِها لي المَواعيد بِالمَطلِ

    She kept faith when she evaded her promise that day at the sand's bend;

Her way with me has always been promises deferred.

White oryxes appeared from the full moon's mansions; their dwelling

Was at the bend, from Dhu al-Arakah to al-Athl.

Sweet of teeth, among tender, budding-breasted maidens,

Lovely in their swaying, drunk on coquetry.

    Budding-breasted maidens—yet they are stars

Risen in beauty's heaven beyond any likeness.

They clothed swaying forms in wondrous patterned brocade,

Forms radiant youth had watered, bucketful upon bucketful.

Their necks wore what lay within their mouths,

As the necks of hills wear pearls of dew.

They passed the night on the sandy flat, to the right of the preserve,

Grazing the heart's preserve, not one of moringa trees and sand.

Ah, may a spring raincloud settle over her dwelling,

Of Simak's rains, unceasing in its downpour,

One of those laughing clouds whose rain smiles back at

The daisy-mouths in gardens with streaming showers.

So it bends the laurel's neck toward its arar flowers,

And buttercups gaze at it with gray-blue eyes.

It renews among those ruins familiar places

Where I knew a woman lovely of neck and coquettish grace,

And a dark-eyed one, drowsy-lidded, who, when he gazed,

Passed round winecups with his wide eyes.

My friend, halt with me among the dwellings; perhaps we

May ask her dwelling about the tender fawn.

Halt: perhaps it will answer, or perhaps

I may leave there some of the madness afflicting me.

If you would halt an hour for your own sake,

Then spend it by those landmarks for my sake.

For many an oryx-like maiden—her full moons

Shone through the dark night of her luxuriant tresses—

Unveiled for us a daisy with spaced teeth,

Wafting draughts of musk amid bright, evenly set teeth.

One of the supple beauties, white of breast and tender,

She said: 'My victim in love, slain without blood-feud,

    وَإِلّا الثُّريّا مِنكَ أَقرَبُ مِن وَصلي

    Union with me costs your life, if you desire it;

Otherwise the Pleiades are closer to you than union with me.'

I said to her, my eye brimming with tears,

And in my heart a fire whose coolness boiled with heat:

'I ransom you, my soul, with what I own; yet

Sa'd of mankind possessed it before I did.'

Leader of guidance, ocean of generosity, crusher of foes,

Ally of bounty, never tiring of giving through all time.

He is the pure scholar by whose right hand

All the excellence within the worlds is apportioned.

He unveils creation's secret, and it is he

Whose reflection brings reality's cipher to light.

He reveals the light by which become manifest

The realities he encounters, of genus and differentia.

He issues judgments and the wisdom that

Shows us truth's path, its ways made clear.

He pours forth lights, the beacon whose

Name, when invoked, brings rain down in drought.

He teaches God's shadow the secrets of His unseen,

As they stand from the beginning in the Mother of the Book.

Murad, seeker of Truth—may his kingdom ever

Be seen united beneath fortune's conjunction.

For Sa'd al-Din's presence in an age such as his

Bears witness to God's oneness and justice.

Blessed is He who endowed him with unerring judgment,

Gleaming upon him like the watered pattern on a blade.

But for you, Sa'd of mankind, never would

The bonds of this kingdom have become so tightly twisted.

This reed pen in your right hand, in its defense,

Takes the place of bright swords and slender spears.

    وَإِلّا فَما فَضلُ الغَواني بِلا شَكلِ

    Kingship is but a tender maiden whose allure comes from you;

Otherwise, what are lovely women worth without allure?

O Sa'd, whose renown has traveled

    Like the east wind through east and west, for all he bestows;

You whose desire the spheres obey in turning,

For whom the spheres almost write down what you dictate:

My poem has come to your door with praise, as though

The eyes of wild beasts had shot her with inward-turned pupils.

Describing you, she belongs no longer to poetry, but

Rises, through your praise, above the orbit of Sirius.

Poetry's masters shun her metrical measure,

As a soul avoids the asp's gaze.

She has a lineage among Tayyi', except that she

Grew among the gardens of al-Sham, amid dripping dew.

Delicate and pure of nature if treated gently,

But if handled roughly, her fang's sharp edge cuts deep.

And many like her I have in Rum, which I deemed

—You excepted—like rain upon a barren land.

Knowledge, forbearance, and wisdom drew her to you,

And what she hopes for from the downpour of your abundant bounty.

She came to milk riches from the generosity of your palm,

And to call down your blessings without delay.

Her patience has left her nothing but a soul

    Suspended between promises and postponement.

Why, then, do you not single her out for intercession,

When your command, like destiny, takes effect on all?

By God, she is no less than the brocade woven

By Muslim, 'Slain by the Fair,' from the ornaments of excellence.

You are a man from whose excellence excellence springs; whoever

Doubts this is like one who has doubted God and the messengers.
