In what abode of youthful passion have I not alighted?
In which house did I not lodge as a bright moon?
And with what reprover’s words have I not been reproached?
And in what region of blame did I not dwell?

أن يستضام بوقفة المستعجل
This dwelling, where love resides, does not deserve
What right does this land have, since love is in it,
to be slighted by a hurried visitor’s pause.
To be darkened by the stance of one hasty?

فالدمع أفصح من سؤال المنزل
If you arrive, entrust the questioning of it to tears;
Whenever tears attend their question,
for tears speak more eloquently than questioning the dwelling.
Tears are more eloquent than the questioner's dwelling.

And if you are not beautiful, then adorn yourself.

kindness from this bountiful minister.
Except for the benevolence of this excellent minister.

The land whose ruler judges with sufficiency—
through the twofold skill of pen and sword-hilt.
My pen and upholding spear are enough for it.

O enricher of the hopeful, has the circling, thirsty one
O you who hopes for rain, does the disappointed wanderer
anything, save rain, more life-giving than an enricher?
Have anything but a dripping from a rainy cloud?

For you is the sincere intention of one adorned.

I have desired to gain your favor—so grant it to me.
And in obtaining your opinion I have desired—grant it to me.
