أظن اليوم يهطل بالمدام

فإن الأفق محمر الغمام

I think the day is raining wine,

for the horizon's clouds are crimson.

وما عودت حمل الكاس إلا

على سكر الكروم أو الكرام

And I have been accustomed to raising the cup only

amid the drunkenness of vines or generous men.

وعهد سماء جودك بالعطايا

كعهد دم الأعادي بالحسام

And your bounty's sky is acquainted with gifts,

as the blood of foes is with the keen sword.

إذا طلعت شموس الراح فينا

وهبنا كل مسرجة اللجام

When the suns of wine rise among us,

we give away every saddled, bridled mare.

أبحر الجود في بحر الأماني

وبدر الملك في بدر التمام

O sea of bounty in the sea of hopes,

and full moon of kingship, a moon in all its fullness,

ومن عبد ابن يوسف صير اسمي

وصير للندى مولى السلامي

and you who made my name 'Ibn Yusuf's servant',

and made al-Salami a master of generosity:

إذا ركبت أناملنا كميتاً

من الجنب المفضض في لجام

when our fingertips mount a bay steed,

from its silver-plated flank, within a bridle,

تحيينا بذكرك وانتقلنا

بمدحك دون سادات الانام

we toast one another with your name, and take our refreshment

in praising you, not the lords of humankind.

طربت فما أبالي ما ورائي

وقار الراح مشعلة أمامي

I am enraptured, so I care nothing for what lies behind me,

and wine's pitch is a torch before me.

جفون المزن مذ عدمت بواك

لرحمتنا وخد للورد دامي

The rain clouds' eyelids, since I have been bereft, are weeping

in pity for us, and the rose's cheek is bleeding.

فأحي بها فتى أحلى مناه

تقدم من فداك الى الحمام

So revive with it a youth whose sweetest wish

is for the one who would ransom you to precede you to death.
