أحنّ إلى لقاء أبي عليٍّ
ويأبىand he refuses أنto يحنّhe yearns إلىfor جواريmy vicinity
ويأبى أن يحنّ إلى جواري
I long to meet Abu Ali,
I yearn for a meeting with my father Ali
yet he refuses to yearn to be near me.
Yet he refuses to yearn for my company
وقدand indeed جليتwas unveiled عليناbefore us الراحthe wine حتىuntil
وقد جليت علينا الراح حتى
مللناwe grew weary of جلوةunveiling البيضthe fair-skinned العذاريvirgins
مللنا جلوة البيض العذاري
And wine has been unveiled before us, until
The winds have uncovered us until
we grew weary of the unveiling of fair-skinned virgins.
We grew weary of the radiance of the white pearls
وصفرand made yellow أوجهfaces العذالthe reproachers يومa day
وصفر أوجه العذال يوم
وجوهfaces شموسهits suns تحكيmirror اصفراريmy pallor
وجوه شموسه تحكي اصفراري
And a day has yellowed the reproachers' faces,
The faces of the slender ones turned yellow the day
the faces of its suns mirroring my pallor.

ونهرand a river تمرحfrolic الامواجthe waves فيهwithin it
ونهر تمرح الامواج فيه
مراحfrolicking الخيلthe horses فيin رهجa cloud الغبارthe dust

And a river where the waves frolic,
And a river in which the waves play
as horses frolic amid a cloud of dust.
Like the prancing of horses in swirling dust
إذاwhen اصفرتturned yellow عليهover it الشمسthe sun خلناwe imagined
إذا اصفرت عليه الشمس خلنا
نميرpure and sweet الماءthe water يمزجis mixed بالعقارwith wine
نمير الماء يمزج بالعقار
When the sun turns yellow over it, we imagine

As though the water were a land of silver,
As if the water was earth made of clay
overlaid with sheets of pure gold.

وأشجارand trees محملةladen كؤوساًcups

تضاحكlaugh together فيin احمرارredness واخضرارand greenness
تضاحك في احمرار واخضرار
And trees laden with cups,
And trees laden with goblets
laughing together in red and green.
Laughing in redness and greenness
إذاwhen أبصرنthey saw فيin نهرٍa river سماءa sky
إذا أبصرن في نهرٍ سماء
وهبتthey bestowed لهon it نجومstars الجلنارpomegranate blossom
وهبت له نجوم الجلنار
When they glimpse a sky in a river,
If we saw the sky in a river
they bestow on it the stars of pomegranate blossom.
