وأسري الى البين لا عن قرم
I leave Baghdad, not out of hatred;
I leave Baghdad, not out of aversion,
I journey by night toward separation, not from desire.
And journey by night toward parting, not out of longing.

I go forth evening and morning, led by two guides:
I go at evening and at dawn, with two guides:
the pride that will not beg, and poverty’s humiliation.
The dignity of proud refusal and the humiliation of poverty.

I hope for a noble youth who honors generosity,
And I hope for a young man who honors generosity,
as the earth hopes for the downpour of steady rains.
As the earth hopes for the fall of steady, gentle rains.
