I have a poem about you in which you see al-Buhturi
You who gaze upon the shining sea,
surpass Abu Tammam in its composition.
Surpassing Abu Tammam's skillful verse,
فهيso it is لفظwording سهلsimple ومعنىand meaning بديعwondrous
فهي لفظ سهل ومعنى بديع
غرةshining brow الفكرthought درةa pearl فيin النظامthe string of verse
غرة الفكر درة في النظام
Its wording is simple and its meaning wondrous:
With facile words and meanings beautifully spun,
thought's shining brow, a pearl in the string of verse.
Fresh ideas strung as precious pearls,
كلماwhenever أنشدتyou recite شهدتyou bear witness بانthat الthe (article continued next line)
كلما أنشدت شهدت بان ال
شعرpoetry أمرa matter مسلمconceded للسلاميto al-Salami
شعر أمر مسلم للسلامي
Whenever you recite it, you bear witness that
Each time I recite, I bear witness -
poetry is an art conceded to al-Salami.
Poetry is made for Islam's peaceful reign.
