يا لحدب الظهور فصع الرقاب

لدقاق الأنياب والأذناب

O curved backs and slender necks

With sharp fangs and tails

خلقت للفساد مذ خلق الخل

ق وللعيث والأذى والخراب

Created for corruption since the genesis of creation

For havoc, harm and destruction

ناقبات في الأرض والسقف والحي

طان نقبا أعيا على النقاب

Burrowers in earth, ceiling and environ

Burrowing holes beyond the veil

أكلات كل المآكل لاتا

منها شاربات كل الشراب

Devourers of all edibles

Quaffers of all potables

آلفات قرض الثياب وقد يع

دل قرض القلوب قرض الثياب

Gnawers of clothes and hearts alike

My concerns for them departed

زال همي منهنّ أزرق ترك

ي السبالين أنمر الجلباب

The grey badger in striped mantle

A lion gone missing, none to watch his den

ليث غاب خلقا وخلقا فمن لا

ح لعينيه خاله ليث غاب

So his maternal uncle, a lion gone missing

Raising his glance facing the storytellers

ناصب طرفه إزاء الروايا

وإزاء السقوف والأبواب

And facing the ceilings and doors

His claws flare when pouncing on game

يتتضي الظفر حين يطفر للصي

د وإلا فظفره في قراب

Else his claws are pointless

No eye sees his evils

لا ترى اخبثيه عين ولا يع

لم ما جثتاه غير التراب

None knows his kills except soil

Embalm and enshroud him

قرطوه وشتفوه وحلو

ه أخيرا وأولا بالخضاب

And paint him first and last with henna

He walks sometimes with bridal jewelry

فهو طورا يمشي بحلى عروس

وهو طورا يحطو على عتاب

And sometimes stumbles in disgrace

Blessed is that friend in company

حبذا ذاك صاحبا هو في الصح

بة أوفى من اكثر الأصحاب

More faithful than most companions
