When we reached Midian's waters, there shone

the springs of my draught, as I seized my chance.

And I returned with what I hope for from time, when my aim

reached the zenith of the circling spheres through my ecstatic attraction.

Then spirits stream from me in a vision

of knowledge and secrets, from the place of my origin.

But if I sought to reach the water, already wounded

by thirst amid the thirsty noonday heats,

and came to the people's encampment, hoping for their drink,

without a dowry of souls or offering my lifeblood,

nor having passed beyond the glittering adornment of

this world's airy whims, under the veil of my heedlessness,

nor stripping from myself the garments of passing thoughts

that cloud my heart, barring my union with my presence,

nor tearing away the tightly stitched veils from a little heart,

born of bodily impurities in the very origin of my clay,

nor stitching shut the rifts of hindrances from the abyss

of base delusions within the cage of my lust,

nor keeping vigil in the encampment, hoping for union with her,

nor oblivious to all my being and my entirety,

nor casting away from myself desire's cords, nor

turning a deaf ear to their severing the bond of my union,

nor wiping from myself copious tears

that cleanse my eyelid of all but her—and my repentance,

nor repenting of every wolf and passing thought,

and delusion, obfuscation, and the tainting of my food,

nor turning back from what pleasures entice me toward,

from what will destroy me through the causes of my lapse,

and I said to the gatekeeper of the last hearts:

Why have time's ordeals exhausted him with my vehemence?

He said: And what does he hope for in love? So have mercy

on your captive, whom every calamity has worn down.

And nothing remains of one whom keen swords have grievously wounded

through his Layla's glances; rescue me with a kindly turn.

Then I said: Can I bear your condition? Then he

said: If your love is true, you can bear my company.

And ask the gatekeepers for leave, that they may seek leave for us,

so that we may gain what wishes and my desire hope for.

And how can we drink, if we have no

coins with the tavern-keeper, nor provisions of my own?

I said: Your charms have indeed gone beyond

reason; I do not know in what way

to meet you, O people of love—and they are who they are.

So grant favor, for longing has destroyed my might

and exhausted me; beauties have been placed within me

by your characteristic ways; I offered my soul and lifeblood.

And I have worn out my body in love of you and kept awake

my eyelids, watching for the phantom at every moment.

And I have purified my heart of all but you; I seek nothing

in existence but you, within my innermost self.

And I increased my remembrance of you, and thus were ennobled

the hidden recesses of my pillars, through remembrance of my beloveds.

And I vowed never to cease tending union with you,

until the Garden of Firdaws, in a chamber's heights.

And I loved whomever you loved; indeed my faith

loves the one you loved, as does my resolve.

He said: You have indeed put forward a lover's proof,

and hinted at love-madness concerning union with me.

I said: Beauty, indeed, is given to coquetry—

so tend a captive now held by the reins.

    Whatever the case, my heart is consecrated to you;

and if I die on the thresholds, I die in my passion.

And if there is no news, I live on what has come

to me as tidings—a fine night-companion for my craving.

And here I lie cast down at the door, hoping for

your tenderness every morning and evening.
