Let a needy guest weep for Abu al-Jadʿaʾ,

and a widow who comes to the assembly, then hastens on.

Had he wished, a swift, gliding steed would have saved him from the horsemen,

tireless when urged by the legs, with the whip unneeded.

But he was a young man who guarded your father's honor,

so, through his fear of disgrace, a host overtook him.

He cried out to Malik when the host came upon him there,

and neither ʿAbd Allah nor Nahshal was there.

And the sons of Maythaʾ were away from him; nor were

Nuʿaym son of Shaytan and Jarwal there.

But he called on the likes of Nabt, as though they were

monkeys on horses that trot and kick.

Shayban has indeed bereaved my people of a horseman,

a defender of their vulnerable places, who never flinched.

You found the sons of Shayban bitter to encounter,

and the sons of Shayban were wont to act so.
