أَحجّاجO Hajjaj لَمdid not تَشهدyou witness مقامvigil بناتهِhis daughters
أَحجّاج لَم تَشهد مقام بناتهِ
وَعمّاتهِand his paternal aunts يُندبنهُthey lament him اللّيلَthe night أَجمعاall of it
وَعمّاتهِ يُندبنهُ اللّيلَ أَجمعا
O Hajjaj, you did not witness the vigil of his daughters
Ahjaaj, you did not witness the gathering of his daughters
And his paternal aunts, lamenting him the whole night through.
And aunts lamenting him all night
أَحجّاجO Hajjaj لمwhy تقتلyou kill بِهthrough him إِنif قَتلتهُyou killed him
أَحجّاج لم تقتل بِه إِن قَتلتهُ
ثَماناًeight وعشراًand ten واِثنتينand two وأربعاand four
ثَماناً وعشراً واِثنتين وأربعا
O Hajjaj, why, if you kill him, do you thereby kill
Ahjaaj, by killing him, if you did kill him
Eight and ten and two and four?
You did not kill eighteen or twenty two or four
أَحجّاجO Hajjaj منwho هذاthis one يَقومُstands مقامهُhis place
أَحجّاج من هذا يَقومُ مقامهُ
عَليناfor us فَمهلاًso be gentle لاdo not تَزِدناincrease our تَضَعضعاfrailty
عَلينا فَمهلاً لا تَزِدنا تَضَعضعا
O Hajjaj, who is there to take his place
Ahjaaj, who can take his place over us?
For us? Be gentle, then; do not add to our frailty.
Go slowly, do not make us more shaken
أَحجّاجO Hajjaj إمّاeither أَنthat تَجودَyou give generously بِنعمةٍwith a favor
أَحجّاج إمّا أَن تَجودَ بِنعمةٍ
عَليناupon us وإمّاor else أَنthat تُقتّلناyou kill us all مَعاtogether
عَلينا وإمّا أَن تُقتّلنا مَعا
O Hajjaj, either bestow a favor
Ahjaaj, either be generous with your gifts upon us
Upon us, or kill us all together.
Or just kill us all together
