We took a stroll to the slope at pleasure's bidding;
We roamed by whim to the meadow's slope, a perilous roam,
May rain water that stroll, and water the slope!
The living water quenched its thirst, and the slope's thirst, from that roam,

There we turned toward idleness and youthful folly
There we inclined towards idleness and youth,
The reins of reason, where it knew no counsel.
The reins of reproof loosed, where advice was not known,

And successors passed by its ruins,
We set out for them at dawn, as desire willed.
We rose to it however desire willed at dawn,

And there the dawn songster lavished song upon us.
And we opened its morning horizons with song,

And the breeze's caravan brought us fragrant cargoes,
And the riding of the breeze brought us gentle scents,
Of perfume, ceaselessly wafting their scent.

So their memory never ceased to draw our souls
So it continued leading our souls in their musings,
And to strike sparks from longing's firestick deep within the heart,
Kindling for the flame of passion amidst thickets, a spark,

On a day we roamed it freely, following our every whim,

At the two banks, and what they contained
Of beauty, beyond our power to describe.
Of beauty that we fell short fully capturing,

We have inherited from it a fragrant paradise,
Rivers flowed around it on every side.
With rivers flowing around it in every direction,

And one afflicted with backgammon, without experience,
And challenged at dice by one unskilled,
Stayed behind us and shamefully kept it to himself.
Who fell short against us and was marred with shame,

Does he claim that the Persians bequeathed it to him,
Claiming the Persians bequeathed it to him,
And their king hid it from everyone else out of greed;
And none but him, being their treasure, could claim it,

Gently, pay no heed to your claim, and dispel,

The delusions of a self that stumbled confused,

The noble wishes he could be counted among them,

So destruction to the claim that opposes what is right,
And through it traded morning's light for darkness.
And substitutes for the light of dawn thereby, darkness,

The only aim being to mention our days that
We frolicked at pleasure's bidding beneath their shade.
We roamed by whim in their shade, roaming playfully.
