وإِنّما نزعاتُ القولِ أَلْوانُ
To you goes my complaint, my heart soothed by it.
To you I complain, my heart frosty with sorrow
And the impulses of speech are but varied hues.
Yet gentleness suffuses my words

Do not hasten to blame it; tend its blossom.
Be not hasty to blame it, guard its blossom
For close reflection may curb some blame.
Restraint may temper some blame

طيرُ البيانِ إِذا ما عزَّ مِرْنانُ
And verse has pleasantries with which sings
Wit has its jesting, to which songbirds trill
the bird of eloquence, when a ringing voice is scarce.
When melody's wellsprings flow clear

Ah, how delightful the salt of letters—its witticisms!
How fine is literature's salt, with such salt
For all are delicacy, beauty, and excellence.
All subtlety, beauty and kindness therein

And now I have been made aware that I had been in a doze;
Now I feel I've been slumbering for a year
then eyelids lifted it from the eyes.
Eyelids lifted from eyes foggy and wan

And my eye beheld, in what it sees, a marvel;
My gaze saw with wonder, beyond ken
beyond it lies a field for improvising verse.
Poetry's arena of concision

What of a pampered one whom they now seek to dissuade
Why take issue with one luxuriant
from me—the reproachers—so that deprivation comes of him?
Whom scholars spurn, depriving him of grace?

I delight in his honey-sweet manners, his coquettish
I'm drawn to his honeyed features, a visage
glances, his soft allure, his luxuriant locks.
Languid, smooth, slender and bent
