The gray doves rang out late at night above towers,
The leaves rustled here above the towers
And repeated their song in ramal and hazaj rhythms.

And consoled every heartbroken one with what

And reminded us of gardens in their arenas
Pearls from dew’s tears lay upon brocade.
Where dewdrops fall on brocade

In days when the cupbearer stood there, passing us
Days when the cupbearer used to pour for us
A sun of wine in an ivory palm,
A sun of comfort in a meadow of ivory

Crowned with pearls formed from its bubbles,
Crowned with rubies from its horizons
Until we took it for Anushirwan in his crown.
That we thought Anushirvan wore as a crown

And the streams had, above the vines, a voice
Drawn from the scabbards of waves.
Humming, shedding the eyelids of waves

شدو الغنا بين أفراد وأزواج
Urging us to draughts from wine-laden goblets
Seeking the elite of the laden cups for us
Were strains of song, in solos and duets,
The song of joy between individuals and pairs

From each singer, full-hipped beneath his waistcloths,
From everything laden that its vessel contains
Slim-waisted, dark-lipped, his gaze languid.
The one with wrinkled cheeks held its edge, downcast

As if we were in the meadows under its shade
Were children [Bahnānā: unclear wording] beneath a coverlet,
Children playing under swings

Until she appeared before dawn [intervening wording unclear],
Until my pastures seemed by betrayal to be magic
Singing like gray doves, quails, and francolins.
Rustling like leaves, jasmine and lilacs
