خَفَقَتْ نسمَةُ الصَبا في الرِياضِ
برداءٍin a robe مِنof الأريجِfragrance مُفاضِflowing
برداءٍ مِن الأريجِ مُفاضِ
The east wind's breeze fluttered in the gardens,
The morning breeze fluttered in the gardens
in a flowing robe of fragrance.
With a robe of fragrance overflowing
وَسَرَتْand drifted فيin حُمولةa cargo منof سلاميmy greetings
وَسَرَتْ في حُمولة من سلامي
ضَمَّختْrichly perfumed جَيْبَthe bosom خيسهاtheir thicket الفَضْفاضِspacious
ضَمَّختْ جَيْبَ خيسها الفَضْفاضِ
And drifted with a cargo of my greetings,
And it glided gently with greetings of peace
perfuming the bosom of their spacious thicket.
Staining its loose pocket with scent
ماno روابٍhills مَوْشيّةembroidered المنْدَلaloeswood الرَّطْthe moist (word begins)
ما روابٍ مَوْشيّة المنْدَل الرَّطْ
بcompletes 'moist' بزهْرwith blossoms عنwith السحائبِthe clouds راضِcontent

No hills, their moist aloeswood embroidered
What a beautiful walk is that of the swaying branches
with blossoms content with the clouds,
Content with the flowers from the satisfied clouds
قدْalready جرىcoursed فيthrough خلالهاtheir midst الماءُthe water ينساflowing (word begins)
قدْ جرى في خلالها الماءُ ينسا
بُcompletes 'flowing' عليهاover them بجدولٍin a stream فيّاضِbrimming
بُ عليها بجدولٍ فيّاضِ
through whose midst water had coursed, flowing
Water flowed through them forgetting
over them in a brimming stream—
The stream rushing over them
صقَلتْهُpolished it النسيمُthe breeze حتىuntil بدتْappeared فيin
صقَلتْهُ النسيمُ حتى بدتْ في
هِit ازوِراراًaslant أَسِرَّةُfurrows الانقباضِpuckering
هِ ازوِراراً أَسِرَّةُ الانقباضِ
the breeze polished it until there appeared in
The breeze polished them until they shone
it, aslant, the furrows of puckering;
Like mirrors with held-in ripples
وَطَفتْand floated فوقَهabove it بطونُbellies حَبابٍbubbles
وَطَفتْ فوقَه بطونُ حَبابٍ
أْطبَقَتْenclosed حملهاtheir burden علىabove الرضراضthe pebbles
أْطبَقَتْ حملها على الرضراض
and the bellies of bubbles floated upon it,
Clouds hovered over them
enclosing their burden above the pebbles;
Blanketing their burden upon the meadows
وغدتand became قضْبُهاtheir boughs بمزْدَوِجِwith paired الطّيْthe birds (word begins)
وغدت قضْبُها بمزْدَوِجِ الطّيْ
رِcompletes 'birds' عُكوفاًbowed علىover معينِflowing water الحياضِthe pools
رِ عُكوفاً على معينِ الحياضِ
and their boughs, with birds in pairs, became
Their staffs became bent over the bird baths
bowed over the flowing water of the pools;
Leaning on the edge of the ponds
ودناand drew near النَّرْجِسُthe narcissus الجَنِيُّfreshly gathered إِلىto باfirst bloom (word begins)
ودنا النَّرْجِسُ الجَنِيُّ إِلى با
كورةcompletes 'first bloom' الوَرْدِthe roses بالعيونِwith eyes المراضِlanguid
كورة الوَرْدِ بالعيونِ المراضِ
and the fresh narcissus drew near the first
The narcissi drew near to the rose bushes
bloom of roses, with languid eyes—
With languid eyes
فيin اقتبالtheir prime يوماًever بأزهىin a more splendid رداءrobe
في اقتبال يوماً بأزهى رداء
أوor بأذكىwith a sweeter fragrance منthan نشرهاits fragrance المستفاضِwidely diffused
أو بأذكى من نشرها المستفاضِ
were ever, in their prime, more splendidly robed,
Anticipating a day in the most splendid attire
or more fragrant than its widely diffused scent.
Or the most fragrant of its abundant blooms
تتهادىglides gently إليكtoward you فيin ثوبa robe عَرفfragrance
تتهادى إليك في ثوب عَرف
منfrom مشوقone filled with longing مشردbanishing الاغتماصdisdain
من مشوق مشرد الاغتماص
It glides toward you in a robe of fragrance,
Swaying toward you in a gown of familiarity
from one filled with longing, who banishes disdain.
Of scattered longing and grief
وابقَand live on واسلمand stay safe ماas long as إِنemphatic particle غداbecame ذوone possessed of حفاظٍloyalty
وابقَ واسلم ما إِن غدا ذو حفاظٍ
ذاكراًremembering مونِقَloveliness العهودِthe times المواضيbygone
ذاكراً مونِقَ العهودِ المواضي
Live on and stay safe, as long as one possessed of loyalty
Stay as you are, farewell, until the morrow comes protected
recalls the charm of bygone times.
