Someone other than me finds love sweet in humiliation,

and someone other than me fears the onslaught of estrangement.

I would never bargain for a breath of union

at the price of abasement—that is a losing bargain.

And it would be ruin to clothe myself in abasement,

while my virtues rise above Saturn.

over a doubt about attaining my white hopes?

And the sweetest thing I find is to entrust my wishes

to my virtues, which spurn them when they come from a wrongdoer.

And should I fear estrangement, when chastity is a treasure

with which I can dispense with the languid-eyed beloved?

And why should I despair, when chivalry is my nature,

and Ibn al-Husam is the prince of this arena?

in glory, beyond all possible reach.

Glory confined itself to his eminence, leaving no

glory for the high-ranking or the brave.

And his gifts came in succession, until indeed

the throats of all my wishes choked on them.

A man of chastity, which has found him, so that ever

its signs are recited by every tongue.

A scholar who delved deep into the virtues, striving

until he drank his fill from their brimming sea.

An unraveler of every mystery that cannot be made clear

by an acumen ascribed to Suhban.

His fingertips never set about playing with the reed-pen

without bringing forth necklaces of pure gold.

    No garden, dewy-flowered and lush,

over which gray doves coo in melody,

is lovelier and more radiant than the lines he wove,

which became a matchless fabric through eloquence.

A patron—praising him restored my ardor,

so I rose above my peers in the assembly.

O noble one, you have lavished honor upon Jilliq,

so now its festival counts as two festivals.

May you be congratulated on this festival; through one like you

the hours rejoice throughout the ages.

    تاهَتْ بمدْحِكَ يا عظيمَ الشانِ

    And I offer her to you, a virgin, her clan's affectionate maiden;

she takes pride in praising you, O you of lofty standing.

She hopes for your gracious acceptance; may you remain safe and at ease

of mind, as long as the ban-tree branches sway.
