الشِعْرُ ضَرْبٌ من التصوير قد كشفت

منه القرائِحُ عن شَتّى من الصُوَرِ

Poetry is a form of depiction; there have been revealed

Poetry is a kind of imagery revealed

from it, by creative minds, images of many kinds.

By native talents in diverse pictures

فاعْمَدْ إِلى قالبٍ عون تُدَمِّثهُ

فاعْمَدْ إِلى قالبٍ عون تُدَمِّثهُ

وافرغ بهِ أَيَّ مَعْنىً شِئْتَ مُبْتكَر

وافرغ بهِ أَيَّ مَعْنىً شِئْتَ مُبْتكَر

So turn to a helpful mold that you smooth,

So take up any mold to work with care

and cast in it whatever original meaning you wish.

And pour in it whatever sense occurs
