O you, intoxicated by the drowsiness of sleep,

Sleep, and leave me an eye to guard your person.

Never have I seen or heard of anything like what

My heart holds of love for you—anything akin to it.

I would ransom you, a young gazelle whose gaze feigned drowsiness,

Before he was found drowsy—by your worth!

He sways like a fresh, supple bough when he walks,

And boughs are loveliest when they sway.

He donned the jewels and rose, strutting with a smile,

Then swept the deep gloom from the pitch-black night.

On his cheek is a beauty mark whose hairs have come

To resemble the smoke of musk; it has become a guardian.

So may God guard him against the enemies' schemes,

And keep him forever a close friend, bringing me solace.
