O giver of the strung pearls of verse,
O you who gently guides the ornamented ode,
And O you who spread a patterned mantle of brocade,
And spreads a cool breeze from the perfumed apparel,
بعثتَyou sent لناto us كأساa cup منof الودِّaffection مُنْعَماًgraciously

You graciously sent us a cup of affection,
You have brought us a cup of affection overflowing with bliss,
And embroidered a finely adorned garden for song.
And adorned a garden for song to twitter delightedly.

It appeared before my eye, O songster who
It appeared to my eyes, O impassioned one,
Came with reproach, whispering like the breeze.
Who stroked a reproach like a gentle breeze.

Repeat melodies for me in the hearing of one eloquent,
Return to me melodies to the hearing of an Arab
Who gladly trades songs on the boughs with a wordless one.
Who relaxes casually upon a reed mat.

And speak face to face of the hidden message, that perhaps I may
And provide him with the confidences of speech, perhaps
Disclose a tale that was kept secret before.
I may utter a conversation that was once concealed.

And unfold some pages of reproach, and perhaps
And spread from the pages of reproach, and maybe
You have allowed the bird of longing to sing.
I confess to the birds of passion to sing.

May God reward the feast well on our behalf for a visit
May Allah reward us for the feast, with goodness,
Which the heart sipped from you in its thirst.
With your heart ennobling it above estimation.

And may He give it life from a feast that caused the meeting,
And God may reunite the two parted ones after...
And perhaps Allah will unite the two estranged ones after what
أتجحدُdo you deny فيconcerning دينthe debt الوفاءof fidelity وتشتكيand you complain
فياso, oh ليتَif only دينَthe debt الودّof love كانَwere منجَّماpayable in installments
Do you deny the debt of fidelity, yet complain?
You disavowed in the religion of loyalty and complained
Ah, if only love's debt were payable in installments!
If only the religion of affection were prognosticated.

So it revived the eyes with the sight of you, for it
So greet with your mirrors of eyes, for it
Becomes in turn a feast and a festive season.
Will become with the next state a feast and season.

You granted it after extreme reluctance,
You allowed it after excessive aloofness,
So my joy returned after it had drawn back.
So my comfort returned after it had recoiled.

And you returned to delaying fulfillment, equivocating,
And you returned to the loyalty of my night, deceiving,
Ah, if only it had been a debt payable in installments!
If only it had been a prognosticated debt.

And here I am, seeking to appease you—not for an offense
And here I am appeasing you, not for a crime
I committed, but I deem it obligatory.
I have committed, but I see it as destined.
