    For you, a literary impulse, through which

    the birds of eloquence sing for solace and delight.

    a meaning that grows tender and sheds fragrant dew between us.

    For it may grow eloquent after its inarticulacy,

    and its refrain turn to praise and love poetry.

    Thus your ear, intimate with verse, is rewarded by it,

    for it stints you neither invention nor refinement.

    within it, and musk for the taking on every side,

    and a pampered one, forever girded with coquetry,

    cloaked in elegance, wreathed in beauty.

    Although, to the eye, no garden can be seen

    in it, nor a singer singing, nor a cup.

    تخاله شارباً للذهن مشروبا

    It is only illusion, arranged in a pattern;

    as you drink, you fancy it a draught for the mind.

    And poetry is a kind of image-making; creative minds have proceeded

    within it by degrees and in order.

    والزهر زهر الثنا تهديه مرغوبا

    So the garden is the garden of virtues, whose soil is sweet;

    and the flowers are the welcome flowers of praise you offer;

    والحسن حسن الوفا تلقاه محبوبا

    and the cup is the cup of pure affection, sipped;

    and beauty is fidelity's beauty, beloved when you meet it;

    and the birds are birds of eloquence, ever singing.

    Blessed is he who spends the night entertaining his ear—blessed!

    And rhyming is the sweetness of speech, whose jewels remain

    among close friends, spread abroad and bestowed.

    And those are the qualities of one whose inner nature is sweet,

    and who has become a jewel chosen for excellence.

    By this I mean Hamza, who rises to such honor

    that beside it the star of al-Jawza appears bowed.

    One who goes forth devoted to excellence, gathering it,

    and practices kindness, initiating it and bringing it about.

    And noble deeds have become a trait of his nature,

    and bestowing affection an unflagging habit of his.

    bringing praise as fragrant as the breaths of the hills.

    By your own worth, refresh your loving ear with her,

    and grant her a welcome in gracious words.
