What a day! Its first moments brought us
the rarest of wonders!
خيلhorses تلاعبُfrolic فيin فضاءthe open expanse of المرthe meadow (first part)
خيل تلاعبُ في فضاء المر
جcompletion of 'meadow' أمثالlike الوصائفْthe young maidservants
ج أمثال الوصائفْ
Horses frolicked in the open meadow,
like young maidservants.
رقصتdanced بهاwith them الفرسانthe horsemen فيin
رقصت بها الفرسان في
الناوردthe tourney مَوْشِيةembroidered المطارفْthe outer mantles
الناورد مَوْشِية المطارفْ
The horsemen set them dancing in
the tourney, clad in embroidered mantles.
فكأنّهاso they seemed قِطَعُpatches الرياضof gardens
فكأنّها قِطَعُ الرياض
تلوحgleam ماemphatic particle بينbetween التنائِفthe barren wastes
تلوح ما بين التنائِف
As though they were patches of gardens,
gleaming amid barren wastes.
تستَنّrace about فيماwithin بينهاbetween them الولthe boys (first part)
تستَنّ فيما بينها الول
دانcompletion of 'boys' مُترَفةdelicately nurtured المعاطِفthe shoulders and sides
دان مُترَفة المعاطِف
Boys raced among them,
soft and pampered of frame.
وقعتwere situated بهاamong them وقعlike the placement of العشورthe tenth-verse markers
وقعت بها وقع العشور
المذهباتthe gilded ones منin المصاحفthe Qur'an manuscripts
المذهبات من المصاحف
They appeared among them like the tenth-verse markers
gilded in Qur'an manuscripts.
والزَمرُand the piping يعزِفُplays music والهوىand love
والزَمرُ يعزِفُ والهوى
رطبfresh وظلُّand the shade of العيشlife وارفْwide-spreading
رطب وظلُّ العيش وارفْ
And the pipes played, and love
was fresh, and life's shade spread wide.
فُرَجpleasurable sights تروقdelight ونزهةand an outing
فُرَج تروق ونزهة
أهدتbestowed لناon us غُرَرَthe choicest اللطائفْof delights
أهدت لنا غُرَرَ اللطائفْ
Enchanting sights, and an outing
that gave us the choicest delights.
ثمthen انتحيناwe made for ساحةthe open expanse of الthe
ثم انتحينا ساحة ال
واديvalley ضحىًat midmorning والعيشand life غاضفْluxuriant
وادي ضحىً والعيش غاضفْ
Then we made for the open expanse of the
valley at midmorning, with life luxuriant,
حتىuntil اجتليناwe beheld الربوةَthe hill (al-Rabwa) الthe
حتى اجتلينا الربوةَ ال
غناءlush with trees منfrom تلكthose المشارفheights
غناء من تلك المشارف
until we beheld al-Rabwa,
lush with trees, from those heights,
تفضيit leads بناwith us لنعيمهاto its bliss
تفضي بنا لنعيمها
حيثُwhere الزمانُtime لناto us مساعِفْfavorable
حيثُ الزمانُ لنا مساعِفْ
leading us into its bliss,
where time favored us.
والطيرand the birds أمثالlike القِيانthe singing slave girls
والطير أمثال القِيان
إِذاwhen شدونthey sang علىto the accompaniment of المعازفmusical instruments
إِذا شدون على المعازف
And the birds were like singing slave girls
when they sang to instrumental accompaniment.
تغدواthey go forth in the morning إلىto فوّارَةٍa fountain
تغدوا إلى فوّارَةٍ
يحتارis bewildered فيهاby it كلُّevery واصفdescriber
يحتار فيها كلُّ واصف
They went in the morning to a fountain
that baffled every describer.
ترميit casts بماءٍwith water كاللجينlike silver
ترمي بماءٍ كاللجين
يشفُّreveals عنthrough خِدعthe feints of المثاقفthe fencer
يشفُّ عن خِدع المثاقف
It cast up water like silver,
revealing a fencer's feints:
متصاعِدٌrising متراجعٌretreating
متصاعِدٌ متراجعٌ
متدافعsurging against itself للعينto the eye واقفْstanding still
متدافع للعين واقفْ
rising, retreating,
surging against itself, yet still to the eye.
