    O breeze of the east, slowly, gently!

    Tell the tale on my behalf, little by little.

    Tell him who fancies the dust in his hands

    the Pleiades: 'Your claim is steeped in ignorance.'

    And be gentle with him, for he has left judgment

    behind good sense, through ignorance of my worth.

    And I see him obedient to Iblis, with

    self-desire set as his direction of prayer wherever he prays.

    So, through ignorance, he came to reckon error

    as guidance, and ignorance as merit.

    So leave off advising, giver of counsel, if you do not

    find anyone fit for counsel and guidance.

    I do not forget how he took possession of a chessboard,

    in delusion, paltry and insubstantial.

    So he came to grasp the reed of victory,

    and deemed chess the arrow that wins the highest share.

    وكلٌّ ولاّه عَقْداً وحَلاّ

    As though the two vizier-pieces were truly his two ministers,

    and he had entrusted each with binding and loosing;

    جُنوداً تحتاطُه حيث حَلاّ

    and as though the white and dark pawns

    were troops guarding him wherever he settled;

    من الزاهرَيْن حيثُ استقلا

    and as though the rooks obediently shaded him

    from the two shining orbs wherever they rose;

    دِ سيقَتْ إِليه جَنْباً وذلاّ

    and as though the elephants were the elephants of India's king,

    driven to him, led alongside and humbled;

    ود أتَتْ نحوه تقبّلُ نَعْلا

    and as though the horses were the steeds of David's son,

    come toward him to kiss a sandal;

    من سُليمان سيّد حازَ فَضْلا

    and as though the leather board were the carpet, mounted

    by a lord who had won favor from Solomon;

    and as though the two chess kings were monarchs held captive

    in his hands, whom the king had captured while still a child.
