Indeed, the beloved gave me a cup to drink.
It did not quench my thirst, and I sought another.

فقال خُذْ ما بقى بكأسي
سُؤراًa leftover draught وأحسنand how fine بذاكthat is سؤراa leftover draught
سُؤراً وأحسن بذاك سؤرا
So he said, “Take what remains in my cup—
a last draught”—and what a fine last draught!

أواخِر الكأس مُتُّ سُكرا
So when he generously gave me what lay at
the bottom of the cup, I died of intoxication.
