Our garden's nightingales rose at dawn,

    singing upon the dew-moistened bough.

And they lament in pity for

love's devotees, and trill with longing.

And so they stir love's bygone tale,

and remind the yearning lover of former days.

Alas for the one toyed with

by the songs of its cherished bird!

It perched upon the lush bough,

and filled my innermost being with fire.

O little warbler of melodies, you have

made longing's firestick spark within me,

    ن فلا أراني اليوم جَلْدَا

    and left me with sore eyelids;

so today I find no endurance in myself.

The memory of the beloved keeps visiting me,

and I see no escape from it.

I have found nothing but misery

since his departure, wasting sickness and toil,

and yearnings that have made all

my limbs a cheek for tears.

I wrestled with them through the longest night,

and passed the night alone among lovers.
