And a gazelle whose glances bewitch—

I long for his nearness, yet fear his shying away.

His beauty never leaves a heart still free

Of love for him without kindling its fire.

His mole enveloped him in wondrous beauty,

And the down upon his cheek forms a halo.

I said: O one who has become beauty’s king,

And whose champions all mankind’s hearts have become,

Be generous to a lovesick lover, if only with an hour of union,

Or with a dream-vision that might quench his burning thirst.

Or else pause on the road, if you do not visit him:

A pause on the road is half a visit.
